      1970年3月27日，Mariah Carey出生于纽约的长岛。Mariah Carey的名字就源自于歌剧 Paint Your Wagon 中 They Call the Wind Mariah 一歌。Mariah 的母亲是爱尔兰人，而她的父亲则是个委内瑞拉籍的美洲黑人。她有一个哥哥 Morgan 和一个姐姐 Alison 。
      1987年 Mariah 从港田高中毕业后，就开始了她的歌唱生涯。为了追逐自己的梦想，她搬去了纽约住，和另外两个女孩合租一个很小的套间。为了谋生，Mariah当过女服务生，衣帽间管理员，餐馆招待，还做过发廊助手。终于，她找到一分差事：歌手Brenda K. Starr的和声歌手。
   以下就是人们众所周知的故事了：1988年11月的一天，Mariah去参加一个派对。她想方设法把她的样带交给了一位唱片制作人，不料却被 Tommy Mottola -- CBS 新力唱片的总裁得到。Tommy 随后离开，在回家的路上他开始听这盘样带。几首歌后，他立即赶回去寻找 Mariah，但她已经离开了。几天之后，Mariah 与新力签定了合约。

   1997年，Mariah和Tommy Mottola透露了他们即将分手的消息。离婚后 Mariah 推出了"Butterfly"，同时也开始了在艺术上的转形，她的曲风也变得介于 hip-hop 与R&B之间。并且Mariah开始展现她出她更为成熟性感的一面。这也是Mariah自我解放的标志。专辑"Butterfly"中又诞生了两首冠军单"Honey"以及"My All"。
   1998年，在世界音乐奖颁奖典礼上，Mariah 荣获了"最畅销R&B艺人"奖和一项"90年代世界最畅销唱片艺人"的终生成就奖。同年，她推出了一张精选集"独一无二"（#1's），收录了她全部的排行榜冠军单曲。这张专辑中还收有一首她与Whitney Houston的合唱歌曲，"When You Believe",此歌获得了当年奥斯卡最佳原创歌曲奖。
   1999年9月30日，"Heartbreaker"，Mariah全新专辑中首先单独推出的单曲，登上了Billboard流行单曲榜的首位。这也是她的第十四首冠军单曲。这一骄人成绩只有 Beatles（20）和 Elvis Presley （17）能匹敌。她的新专辑“彩虹（Rainbow）”于1999年10月底在全球大多数国家上市。
   Mariah Carey 的演艺生涯就是一连串的成功专辑。虽然有时被评为"最差衣着人士奖"，但这并不能阻止她的5首单曲都达到了Billboard的第一位。她保持着现代Billboard历史上拥有冠军单曲时间最长的记录。这就是Mariah，当代最成功的女歌手之一。
